报告题目:Only proteins, much more than proteins: silks, cell mechanics

报告摘要:Spider silk fibers are among the most attractive biological materials. Their outstanding mechanical properties triggered their study within the frame of materials science to unveil the relationship between composition, processing and properties, and nowadays we seek to design artificial silk fibers with the desired properties by means of biotechnology. The detailed characterization of the microstructure of silks is a basic requirement for the production of high performance bioinspired fibers. The seminar will describe our latest findings on the microstructural characterization of natural and bioinspired silks by atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.
While silk fibers, containing only proteins, have attracted the interest of mechanics-of-materials scientists due to their exceptional mechanical properties, cells are for them extremely attractive due to the microstructural complexity, reflected in the complex mechanical behavior. Moreover, the biological and biomedical importance of cell mechanics is increasingly accredited, in terms of the mechanical properties of cells as biomarkers and of the effects of the mechanical signals on cells. In the seminar, our contributions in the field of mechanical characterization of cells will be presented.
 
报告人简介:西班牙马德里理工大学教授。2004年于西班牙马德里理工大学, 材料科学与工程专业获得博士学位。西班牙断裂力学协会组织委员会委员(2009)。重要奖项包括:Madrid-MIT M+Visión Consortium大赛IDEA2项目组决赛选手(2014年);2012年,荣获Caja Madrid 基金会奖赏,与Uyeda博士(团队另一申请人)赴海外(日本)进行三个月的研究;2009年,马德里理工大学第二届南极奖获奖学术顾问;2008年,“Aqueous and Porous Materials”项目获捷克共和国Marie Curie Grant School表彰。
